Modern Tragic Hero

Lindsay Lohan is a perfect example of a tragic hero for many reasons. One reason being she has a tragic flaw that has been noticed by millions of followers and fans around the world. Lindsay’s tragic flaw is the abuse of drugs. She has struggled with drugs for years and gone to rehab countless times. “Lindsay is on a path of self destruction and doesn’t seem to be coming off of it (Tauber 1)”. Lindsay’s future seemed so bright when she was a child star bringing in millions of dollars and starring in multiple movies, but unfortunately it has been halted by illegal actions. Wether or not Lindsay will turn her life around is something no one knows for sure but will be a scene to watch.

Pesky Power and Party Slogans

imageThe party slogans in “1984” are extremely symbolic and willing to be interpreted many different ways. The slogans are WAR IS PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. These slogans state the exact opposite of what humans have always been taught and shows what strikes me as hostility. The party uses pain, fear and violence to get it’s power and now that they have it, they will not give it away without a fight. The text states “Power is in inflicting pain and humiliation. Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing” (Orwell 244). This shows how much the party cares about their people… They don’t. All they want is power and they could care less if they have to kill whoever stands in their way. In fact, it seems that they would rather kill their followers than have to work out an issue. Based on how the population of Oceania easily accepts these slogans and supports them drives me to think that they are easily persuaded… Or that they pretend to support them out if fear for big brother. What I mean by this is maybe there are people who strongly disagree with these slogans but support them solely because they are scared of what could happen to them. After all, there is no way of knowing who is supporting because they truly believe or people who are faking it. These slogans suggest that the way for the party to succeed is through violence and wrongdoing… And it seems like it’s working.
